What is it?


YRE engages participants aged 11-25 in environment-focused citizen journalism, encouraging them to investigate local environmental issues and solutions, and report on them through articles, photos, podcasts or videos. The programme develops participants’ skills and knowledge about the environment, enhances communication and citizenship skills, individual initiative, teamwork, critical analysis, social responsibility, and leadership abilities. 

There is an overall competition prize fund of €2,000 available for the winners.

                                                 2025-2026 Theme

This year's YRE theme will be Food Security and Climate Change. We aim to encourage young leaders to report on a topic related to a Green-School or Green Campus theme they are working and aligned with an SDG. 
Young reporters may submit more than one type of submission to different media categories.

Who can enter?

The competition is open to groups of students or individuals aged 11-25 from all secondary schools involved with Green Schools and all third level institutions involved in Green Campus.  There are three age categories:
  • 11-14 years
  • 15-18 years
  • 19-25 years


What's on offer?

The top 100 shortlisted students will be invited to take part in an awards ceremony in May 2026  - where the overall winners will also be announced and receive their prizes! Overall winners will be entered into the international YRE competition in June where they will represent Ireland.  Winners also get the opportunity to report at An Taisce events.
